Free Bee SVG Download – Ha ‘Bee’ Birthday

I have a free Bee SVG for you tonight. Looking at this smiling bee is definitely cheering me up a bit. While I am glad to be back here posting a new file for everyone, it has been a rough week here my neighborhood.

Sadly, a little girl on her bike was hit and killed on her way to my daughter’s school this week. It is so tragic to lose such a young life. Please keep her family in your prayers. Her name was Irie.

It has been so heavy on my heart, especially having to share the news with my young daughters. They are so sweet though, and they were reassuring me that she was not dead, but alive with God in heaven. Such sweet little hearts children often have.

BEE Layered Paper Art

Anyhow, if you need a little cheering up after such a heavy topic, I have just the file for you tonight. I made this cute little bee for a gift a few weeks ago. It was my first attempt at a layered paper art picture.

Actually, this is how the layered file looked in Adobe Illustrator before I cut it out.

Not that I like to brag, but I do really love how it turned out. Hopefully the recipient did too!

If there is enough interest, I may put the layered file up for sale on my Etsy Shop, but for now I wanted to share the cute little bee. Before I can put it up for sale, I will need to write up instructions and figure out how to make the name layer more customizable.

UPDATE

I managed to get the layered file cleaned up and posted on Etsy!
Find it HERE.

The one thing I would change were I to make it again is to put a little more support behind the middle of the name layer as it was a wee bit wobbly.

Free BEE SVG and hand-lettered sentiment

Also, because I felt the little bee was lacking something, I hand-lettered a cute birthday message to go with it. Hopefully you enjoy it and are able to make something adorable with it.

I also have some other cute animal files if you want to take a look.

Happy Creating!

If you are curious, I separated the layers in my picture using cork scraps. I use cork for the backs of the coasters I have on my Etsy Shop, and always have lots of scraps left over. They turned out to be just perfect for the job. Here are some behind the scenes photos of this project.

Well, I sincerely hope you have a wonderful week. BEE happy, and enjoy life.

Dolphin SVG Time. Plus, be sure to grab your animal alphabet file!

Dolphins and a Heart for Valentine’s Day

Dolphin Love

Welcome and happy February! Do you love dolphins? I had a friend growing up who loved all sea animals. We were landlocked in Colorado, but she loved them. She was a good artist too and drew lots of beautiful images of the sea and its residents. Dolphins are such graceful and intelligent creatures that it is easy to see why people love them.

Having just moved to San Antonio, I am looking forward to visiting Sea World sometime soon too. I think our three little girls will love it.

Someone stopped by earlier this month and asked for a dolphin image. Well, here you go! The idea was a good one so I thought I would whip something up.

Now, if only I were good at coming up with catchy little phrases for a card. Any ideas? There has got to be something about dolphins and Valentine’s Day cards somewhere.

Easy DIY Valentine’s Day Card Made with Minimal Supplies – kwernerdesign blog

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Do you want to make your own DIY Valentine’s Day Card? Well, Valentine’s Day is approaching rapidly! Therefore, you should start as soon as you can! Since time flies by so quickly, you should start now before it is too late. I would know. While I have lots of ideas, I have so little time.

So, take a look at these and make your own today. Then you will feel great and have something wonderful to give to a loved one.

While I have read a lot of these type of collection posts, this is my first time trying my hand at one so I hope you enjoy. All of these cards are very beautiful, and as a bonus, the rose overlay card has a free svg file too!

DIY Valentine’s Card Inspiration

Which is your favorite? Personally, I am excited to try the watercolor heart cards, as I have been very excited about water color these days. If you want to see what I have been up to, check out my Instagram Feed.

Simple or Elaborate?

First, using a needle and thread to make a simple but beautiful card with a little texture is a fabulous idea for a DIY Valentine’s Card. Or, if you don’t want to break out a needle and thread but love the texture, try the heart overlaying a bunch of pretty ribbons.

In reality, the DIY Valentine’s Day card with the rose overlay may be just my speed this week. Since it is just one overlay and the file is already made for you, it shouldn’t take long. All you need is a cutting machine, cut it out and slap in on a background. Done!

Lastly, I will say that the mini envelopes cards is probably my very favorite. But, as it looks time consuming, will probably not be getting made in my house this year at least.

What do you do for Valentine’s Day? Do you exchange cards, go for dinner, go on a romantic getaway, or do nothing at all? Wishing you lots of love this February.

Oh, and don’t forget to take a look at my past Valentine’s Day Creations!

How to Make and Use a Freezer Paper Stencil

Hello Kitty.

Initially, I was very negative about Hello Kitty. I’m not sure why, but I think it has to do with my knee-jerk negative reaction toward anything popular. However, I have come to terms with the fact that my 1 and 3-year-old little girls are all about Hello Kitty. They love it. My one-year-old will say “kitty cat” repeatedly whenever she glimpses something with the Hello Kitty brand on it. Yep, branded characters work.

Well, enough of that. My girls love Hello Kitty, so we made a Hello Kitty dress together. I happened upon a very nice 4T dress at the thrift store. I love thrift stores. It is 100% cotton, long sleeved for winter, pink, and only $2. Oh, and it has pockets. Dresses with pockets are the best thing ever. It was a great deal, and it made the perfect base for this project. Since I knew the item didn’t cost me much, it allowed me to go forward without fear of ruining something valuable.

If you have a cutting machine like the Silhouette Cameo and you don’t have freezer paper, you are missing out on some great projects. I don’t have the latest version of the machine, but it is still going strong. You can buy freezer paper in most grocery stores. It should be near the other rolls of waxed paper, parchment paper, etc. It has a paper side, and a glossy plastic coated side. The reason it is so neat for crafting is that the plastic melts slightly when heated and makes a temporary bond with fabric. That is to say, you can use your iron to make your stencils stay put! If you can’t find it at your grocery store or prefer to buy online, Amazon sells it here.

Next, I searched for an appropriately simple little image for the dress. This is the one I found.

Once you find the image you want to use, open it up in Silhouette Studio or in Inkscape. I actually did this in both programs, because even with the Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio, it won’t let me export SVG files. Boo! But it does let you open them…

Anyhow, once you open the image, you need to trace it. Here are the two variations I use most often. There are tutorials on both of these if you search the web, but feel free to ask in the comments if you need help with this.

In Inkscape, use the “Trace Bitmap” dialogue to create an svg file from your image.

In Silhouette Studio, use the Trace function to select your image and create your cut file.

Once your image is traced, you should have a cutting file like the one above. It looks the same as the image, but it is made of lines that scale and is a file your machine can cut out.

And finally, how to actually use your stencil and create your image! These are roughly the steps I took.

  1.  Prepare your image for cutting (described above).
  2. Cut a piece of freezer paper down to the size of your cutting mat. I placed mine with the coated side upward. If your mat is especially sticky, you may want to place it the opposite way. The important thing here is that your design will be right side up when the coated side of the paper is placed on the fabric. If your image has text (like mine) this is especially important. Hopefully you will not have to cut yours out twice like I did to get it right!
  3. Cut out your design and carefully remove it from the mat.
  4. Place the pieces of the design that you DON’T want painted onto your fabric. They will keep the paint off these spots and help form the design. Iron them in place with a medium hot iron, it only took a few seconds for me. Also, it may help to do one piece at a time. If you have text, don’t forget the insides of letters like ‘o’.
  5. Once your design is in place, make sure all the edges that you don’t want painted are covered and place it in a good spot for painting. I used a big box and several plastic bags for this.
  6. Paint! My knowledge of fabric paint is fairly limited. However, I spotted these fabric spray paints on sale at the craft store and thought I would try them out. They seem to have worked fairly well if you account for my impatience between coats. I knew I ought to follow the directions of using light coats and waiting 5 minutes between them. I knew it, but I didn’t follow it. I think this is the main culprit for the slight seepage of paint I got around Hello Kitty’s bow.
  7. Once paint is dry (or at least mostly dry!), peel away the freezer paper and admire. The paint I used said it would be ready to use in 30 minutes, but not safe to wash for at least 72 hours.

Here is the final result, and my cute little model. She loves it, of course.

Have fun making cute clothes! If you want to make a cute valentine’s item, check out some of my Valentine’s Day cutting files. I think they would probably make cute shirts!

Love Card FREE SVG Cutting File Download

Valentine's Day Card

Love

February is almost upon us. Looking through all the ideas I have found on cutting files to make, I stumbled upon this lovely little kirigami card. Now, I don’t know where it comes from originally, so it would be wise not to use it commercially. However, this is where I found the image that I based this file on.

EDIT (2/11/19): I have found the original author of this file, Maria Victoria Garrido,  and she has kindly given me permission to keep this post up. Her site is full of very beautiful work and many files that can be adapted for cutting in SVG format. However, her files are for PERSONAL use only. Please be aware and don’t use them for commercial purposes.

Her website is: http://marivi_10.tripod.com/myhomenew.html

Kirigami Love Hearts Card Template

If you cut this out, the pattern above is very useful for scoring the fold lines in the correct places.

I love how detailed the little hearts are. You could definitely use the heart cut outs for other applications, including your own pretty Valentine’s Day card. I cut out the file twice in two different colors so that I could mix and match them. They came out lovely in my opinion.

Tacky or not, I gave one to my husband and informed him that he could write a nice message on it for me for Valentine’s Day. How’s that for an over the top hint?

Assembly Tips

For assembly, you do have to be somewhat delicate so as not to break things as you bend them into place. I used a ruler and hard pointed tip to score the lines where it was supposed to bend. If you are so inclined, you could definitely add them to the cut file and score them with your machine. I don’t have the dual carriage Silhouette and didn’t feel like running it through twice.

You definitely DO want to score this before you attempt to fold it. It is a bit difficult to bend into place even if you score it. I found it useful to weave something small like a knitting needle back and forth through the letters to get them to bend in the correct direction.

And now, the file.

Heart Card Pop Up SVG File

Here are the hearts that attach it. One note, if the paper you cut it out on has a front and a back, you will want to flip a copy of the heart so that you have one facing each direction. I didn’t do this, and have a card with two hearts facing the same way. Oops!

Make Your own EASY Valentine’s Day Card (Requires Cutting Machine)

Valentine’s Day is almost here. I love to celebrate holidays and occasions, but honestly, I haven’t had much energy for preparing such things as of late. Still, I wanted to at least make a nice card for my husband with my Silhouette Cameo cutting machine. After all, I love designing files for it, so perhaps I should use them once in a while.

This card uses a couple of Valentine’s Day SVG  cutting files I posted previously:

Striped Heart Overlay

Happy Valentine’s Day Sentiment

My card is fairly basic. I used a piece of white cardstock for the base and then added the heart overlay on the front, and the sentiment inside.  I used a thin paper with red roses printed on it. There are, I’m sure, many of you ladies who would be able to make a much much more elegant card from these files, but this is what I was able to do while my two baby girls were running around!

Give it a whirl, it doesn’t take too long. Be sure to write a loving note and seal it with a kiss. Ha! I didn’t even put mine in an envelope. My husband probably won’t even notice anyhow. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

I love to see your creations – feel free to leave a photo or link so I can take a look at what you come up with too!

Shapes and Colors Learning DIY

My daughter is quickly nearing the age of two. Her interest in talking and learning new words is at a record high, and I have been wanting something for her to play with that would also help her to learn a few new things in the process.

At her age, sorting and moving things from one spot to another is a fabulously exciting activity, so I thought maybe we could try to learn and sort with some shapes and colors.

Naturally, I wanted to put my Silhouette Cameo cutting machine into the creative action, so I came up with some laminated shapes that I then cut out in circles. You could definitely do this without a cutting machine, however, and the laminating machine is not strictly necessary either. I wanted these to last a while, so I laminated them, but if you use a heavy cardstock, they should last a for a while also and be just as educational.

In my set of colors and shapes, I picked out 6 of each, for a total of 36 cards. I choose the colors RED, BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW, PURPLE, and ORANGE. For the shapes, I went with CIRCLE, SQUARE, TRIANGLE, HEART, STAR, FLOWER. Now, I know “flower” isn’t really a traditional shape choice, but I didn’t like the other options I thought of, such as diamond (easily confused with square) and more elaborate polygons.

The process was fairly simple, with only one small trick or two to get my machine to cut the circles around the shapes correctly (even if not quite perfectly).

First, pick out your shapes, size them all about the same, and arrange them evenly on your page.

Next, add a circle behind each shape, all of the same size (these you will cut out after you laminate the shapes).

Cut out just the shapes (not the array of circles) from your first color page. You need to cut out at least one page of shapes arranged inside the circles so that you have a template to place them correctly in the laminating page. I also cut a separate sheet with just my 6 circles, though this isn’t strictly necessary.

To save some of the page of cardstock, I then rearrange the shapes in another file more compactly and cut them out of the other 5 colors of cardstock.

Now, it is time to laminate. I pulled out a laminating sheet and placed it on top of my template (the page with the shapes all lined up). Then, I took a set of shapes and placed them inside the laminating sheet using the template as a guide.

I cheated a little and used an iron to quickly stick the shapes in place. Placing a sheet of paper over the sheet, I put the iron down for only a couple seconds, just enough to keep the shapes from shifting while I put the contraption in the laminating machine.

Once you have all 6 sets of shapes laminated in the correct alignment, place the sheets back through your cutting machine one at a time. This time through, select “No Cut” for the shapes, and “Cut” for the 6 circles around the shapes. If you lined the shapes up correctly with your template and put the sheet in the correct way, it should cut out nice perfect circles around your newly laminated sheets.

My shapes were not all perfectly centered in their circles (due to my own imperfections), but the resulting set of shapes was still awesome.

My daughter took to them immediately. Even as I finished each sheet and handed them to her, she kept demanding “More, more”. We practiced sorting them into piles of different colors and then shapes. She did not know the names of all these shapes yet, but is picking it up quickly.

I think we will have a lot of fun with these and that we will be able to come up with new games and things to learn with them as she grows. I am already thinking of games like “Can you give me the Red Flower?”, or counting games, matching, etc.

What games would you play with these?

Happy Valentine’s Day – A free SVG sentiment

February is almost upon us! I have had a long hiatus from this blog in these winter months, but I have really been wanting to post more free files and inspiring projects up here. Now, this might only be because I enjoy both the motivation it provides to my crafting as well as the joy I get from seeing people enjoy my posts.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I figured I would need a sentiment to go on the many (i.e. – maybe one) cards I will be making. I based this file on AdineKirnberg-Script font which I found free online. I added some hearts and connected it a bit, so hopefully it will cut well. If you try it out, let me know. I will share my finished Valentine’s Day Card when I get around to making it!

Enough introduction, here is the sentiment. As always, please use my files and downloads for personal use only.

Here Come the Elephants

Aren’t Elephants awesome? They are such elegant creatures, but yet so strong and mighty too. I rounded up some free images I found on the web and created some awesome cutting files!

I am envisioning the elephants with the heart as an awesome note card or love note design – stuck in a frame, it could be a very simple cut and go card. I’m not sure what I will use the African Elephant design for, but perhaps it would make a good vinyl application to my daughter’s nursery. Lately I have been envisioning her walls bedecked with multitudes of vinyl animals.

There is also an elephant sketch file that would work well on the front of a baby shower card or perhaps a baby announcement.

Finally, I found the last elephant as a free tattoo design that would look awesome in vinyl, or perhaps cut as a stencil.

If you use these in any of your project, definitely show me! I would love to see how your crafty brains put these to use.
